Chamoli

Chamoli is a beautiful town nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. It is perched at an elevation of 1300 metres above sea level and is bedecked on the holy banks of river Alaknanda. The city offers a promising view of nature, woods, the rumbling creeks and the alpine hills. 



Chamoli, the abode of Gods, reputed for its shrines and temples, birth place of 'Chipko Movement ' with its strategic significance is one of the hill district of Uttarakhand, India. Chamoli proved itself " the most spectacular in its natural assets ; be it maintain scenery , valley aspects, water-edges, floristic varieties, dramatic landform or the climatic cardinalities ".

Geography of Chamoli

Chamoli, carved as a seperate revenue district in 1960 out of the erstwhile Grahwal district, lies in the Central Himalya and constitutes a part of the celebrated 'Kedar Kshetra'. The District Chamoli is surrounded by Uttarkashi in North-West, Pithoragarh in South-West,Almora in South East,Rudraprayag in South-West and Tehri Grahwal in West. The geographical area of the District is around 7520 sq.kms.

Gopeshwar:

The view of Chamoli from Gopeshwar is very picturesque and can be best described when seen with ones own eyes. The town of Gopeshwar is the administrative headquarters of the Chamoli district. There are several ancient temples in Gopeshwar having great religious importance. The main attractions are the ancient temple of Lord Shiva, Vaitarni Kund and the splendid views of the Himalayas. Trek to the revered Rudranath temple commences from Saggar which is situated 5kms ahead from Gopeshwar on Guptkashi-Gopeshwar road.

Gopinath Temple: 

The Gopinath temple was built by Raja Saggar. The residing deity of this sacred temple is Lord Shiva. According to mythology a cow used to give milk on the Shiva Lingam every day at this place. When the king saw the cow performing this activity he decided to construct a temple at this place and since then this temple became popular.
