Chamoli is a beautiful town nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. It is perched at an elevation of 1300 metres above sea level and is bedecked on the holy banks of Alaknanda River. The city offers a promising view of nature, woods, the rumbling creeks and the alpine hills.

Geography of Chamoli
Chamoli, carved as a seperate revenue district in 1960 out of the erstwhile Garhwal district, lies in the Central Himalayan region and constitutes a part of the celebrated 'Kedar Kshetra'. The District Chamoli is surrounded by Uttarkashi in the North-West, Pithoragarh in South-West,Almora in South East,Rudraprayag in South-West and Tehri Grahwal in West. The geographical area of the District is around 7520 sq.kms.

The view of Chamoli from Gopeshwar is very picturesque and can be best described when seen with one's own eyes. The town of Gopeshwar is the administrative headquarters of the Chamoli district. There are several ancient temples in Gopeshwar having great religious importance. The main attractions are the ancient temple of Lord Shiva, Vaitarni Kund along with the splendid views of the Himalayas. Trek to the revered Rudranath temple commences from Saggar which is situated 5kms ahead from Gopeshwar on Guptkashi-Gopeshwar road.
The Gopinath temple was built by Raja Saggar. The residing deity of this sacred temple is Lord Shiva. According to mythology, a cow used to give milk on the Shiva Lingam every day at this place. When the king saw the cow performing this activity, he decided to construct a temple at this place and since then this temple has become popular.
