Pithoragarh is the easternmost district of Uttarakhand, neighbouring Tibet in the north and Nepal in the east. A place of exquisite natural beauty and serenity, Pithoragarh is popularly known as the 'Little Kashmir'. This captivating town with fascinating forests around it is located at an impressive height of 1,645 m and is nestled in a small valley. Pithoragarh town is a historical landmark. It was a major center of power during the regime of the Chand Kings in Kumaon.

From here, pilgrims take their journey to the holy shrines, Kailash and Mansarovar.This valley also nestles the snow-crested peaks Nanda Devi East (7,434 m) and West (7,817 m). Below these mighty peaks lie the alpine valleys and glaciers like Milam, Ralam, Namik and Sundardunga.

  Best Season / Best Time to Visit Pithoragarh


Pithorgarh has a cool but pleasant climate in summers and chilly climate in winters.

Summers (April to June) are very pleasant with moderate climate and the temperature ranges from 7-20°C. Summers are ideal for all sight seeing, temple visit and also for visiting nearby attractions.
Monsoons (August to November) are accompanied with light showers. The days are pleasant and the nights are chilly.

Winters (December to March) are chilly days with average minimum touching near 4°C, with maximum never crossing 8°C. Typically tourists avoid this season. The winters are accompanied with heavy snowfalls.

The best season to visit Pithorgarh is from April to November.

April to August offers cool and pleasant climate and the right period to spend relaxing moments in the outdoors and is ideal for temple visits.

September to November is good for sight seeing and this season is eye catching with beautiful sceneries.

December to March is chilly. Those who like snowbound vacations can opt for this season. Heavy woolen clothes are required for outings in this period.

Kapileshwar Mahadev

 

It is a cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, situated in the outskirts of the city. From here, one can have a panoramic view of the Sor Valley and the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

 

Pithoragarh Fort

An impressive fort built by the Gorkhas in the 18th Century. The Government Buildings are housed in this Fort.

Dhwaj Temple

At an altitude of 2,100 m, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Jayanti. It is located at a point, which offers a scenic view of the valley and the hills around and the snow-capped peaks. Distance is 21 km by bus and 5 km trek.

Thal Kedar

Located at a distance of 20 km from Pithoragarh, this place is of great religious importance. A large fair is held every year during Shivaratri.

Askot

Situated at a distance of 54 km from Pithoragarh, Askot is an ancient kingdom of the Katyuri dynasty. This place is famous for Askot Wildlife Sanctuary established for the conservation of musk deer. The name is derived from Asi-Kot, which literally means 80 forts. The remains are still visible. This place is surrounded by tall trees and waterfalls.

BEYOND PITHORAGARH

Dharchula

96 km from Pithoragarh, on the banks of river Kali, it's a transit point, to Kailash-Mansarovar and Adi Kailash. A major wool and woolen products centre.

Gangolihat

77 km from Pithoragarh. This is a major cultural center in the hills, known for socio-religious activities. Situated in the midst of Saryu and Ramganga rivers, this is a place mentioned in ancient literature. Shankaracharya established the famous Mahakali Shaktipeeth in the 8th century. Goddess Kali is the reigning deity of the town.

Munsyari

At a distance of 135 km from Pithoragarh, Munsyari is being developed as a major winter sports center.
