On 21st February 2019, Chandighat River Front Development project developed under Namami Gange dedicated to the people in Haridwar, which was completed months before the actual schedule. A beautiful gift to the holy city, the Rs 69.18-crore project has 41,872 sq metre ghat built on the left bank of river Ganga stretching across Har ki Pauri in the Chandighat area. Even though there is no comparison with the religious importance of Brahma Kund and Har Ki Pauri, the new ghat is attracting people with its location, scenic views and the vast area accommodating a large number of pilgrims and tourists everyday.
Besides the bathing ghat located on the north side of the Chandighat bridge, a 140-m long cremation ghat has also been constructed opposite the bridge, which is more sustainable than conventional cremation methods. It also has canopies for rituals and lockers to keep ashes.
The ghat has all the necessary facilities for tourists like Information Centre, a 3,600-sq m parking area and an extensive toilet complex. The unique Ganga Museum and the souvenir shop should be on the go-to list of every tourist. For refreshments, there is a cafeteria as well.
For the ease of pilgrims, the ghat has been provided with 17 canopies (chatris) where people can perform pooja. A vast and airy prayer hall with a capacity of 300 people has also been constructed. Safety of travellers have been kept in mind with easy steps to the ghat with heavy steel railings. The ghat area is well-lit with high-mast lights and at night the lights turn the ghat into a beautiful spectacle.
