About Rishikesh

Rishikesh is one of the most tranquil places in Uttarakhand, surrounded by hills and criss-crossed by the wide and sacred river Ganges. It is often claimed as the ‘Yoga Capital of the World’.
Back in the 1960s Rishikesh gained instant fame as the site where The Beatles came to stay with their guru, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. It is an excellent place to meditate and study yoga.
Rishikesh also offers plenty of opportunities for trekking. Enjoy a good trek starting from Laxman Jhula point to Himalayan pilgrimage centres such as Badrinath, Kedarnath , Gangotri, Yamnotri. It is said that great sage Raibhaya did severe penance here and as a reward, God appeared to him in the form of Hrishikesh, hence the name.
Rishikesh has numerous ashrams, some of which are internationally recognized as centers of philosophical studies, yoga and meditation. An International Yog Festival is organized here every year by Uttarakhand Tourism between 1st and 8th of March. For the adventurous, there are opportunities for white water rafting on the Ganga. The climate is pleasant, One can visit Rishikesh any time of the year.

The Beatles

Uttarakhand has always shared a special relationship with United Kingdom, be it being a second home to famous British wild-life conservationist Jim Corbett, or being a favourite destination among iconic musical band- The Beatles.
The Beatles were a legendary rock group that formed in Liverpool, England, in 1960 by Fab Four – John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They went on to transform popular music as a creative, highly commercial art form over the next decade. The Beatles were one of the most popular bands of all time, producing songs like “Yesterday, “Hey Jude,” “Penny Lane, “With A Little Help From My Friends,” “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown),” “Day Tripper” and “Come Together” and many more.
Rishikesh in Uttarakhand has a great connect with The Beatles. It’s 1968. The Beatles needed a holiday. Since their first hit ‘Love Me Do’ just over five years ago, touring and recording schedules have been non-stop. Beatlemania was at such a height, no one can hear the live shows over screaming fans.
By this point the group’s interest in Indian spirituality and music had been growing for some time – George Harrison’s especially, having learned sitar with legendary musician Pt. Ravi Shankar for tracks such as Norwegian Wood. They decided to take a break to learn transcendental meditation in a holy town Rishikesh in the foothills of the Himalayas. They arrived with their wives and entourage at Rishikesh, the birthplace of yoga, in February 1968.
The band slept in simple, egg-shaped stone bungalows 50 metres above the Ganges at the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram, known locally as Chaurasi Kutia, meditating five hours a day and eating a vegetarian diet. They shared the compound with around 70 other students, some of them celebrities including Mia Farrow, Donovan and Mike Love from The Beach Boys.
That stint turned out to be one of the most creative periods in the group’s career. They wrote many songs and 17 of them were used in The Beatles (White Album) and two more in Abbey Road. Their long periods of meditation and being in a quiet, placid environment helped them relax.
As a part of International Yog Festival 2018, to commemorate the 50 years of The Beatles Visit to Rishikesh, Department of Tourism and Department of Forest, Govt. of Uttarakhand is hosting an event in Rishikesh on 4th, 5th, and 6th of March 2018. A Beatles Tribute band from London has been invited to Rishikesh to pay tribute to The Beatles and relive the memories.
As a curtain raiser and to pay tribute to the iconic band, Department of Tourism, Uttarakhand has organized a Networking Evening in London, England (the place where they belong to) on 6th November 2017. A beatles tribute band named ‘Fab Four’ was invited to pay tribute to the legendary – The Beatles. The event was attended by more than 225 people with international travel agents, hoteliers, investors, local media, Uttarakhand Association, dignitaries from High Commission of India, London among several others.
