Tehri is an administrative seat of Tehri Garhwal district and is rapidly developing into a major tourist destination with great potential for tourism and hospitality industry.
Tehri Dam, an engineering marvel and one of the world’s largest hydroelectric project is the pride of Tehri. The dam harnesses water of two important Himalayan rivers- Bhagirathi and Bhilangana. The ruins of Old Tehri lies under water today and New Tehri is a modern town spread over an altitude from 1550-1950 mts above sea level overlooking the gigantic lake and Tehri Dam.
New Tehri has been created after the building of Tehri Dam due to which the old Tehri submerged under the water.
New Tehri is the only planned city of Uttarakhand which is developing as a popular tourist spot because of its pleasant temperature and salubrious weather.
The town also has a rich history to share. It was previously ruled by the Parmar (Shah) Dynasty until the Gurkhas invaded Garhwal in 1803.
However, British took over its control in 18th century and merged Kumaon, Dehradun, and east Garhwal into the British Empire.
After independence, in August 1949, Tehri Riyasat was merged with Uttar Pradesh and a new district called Rudraprayag was declared. Later on February 24, 1960, the state government separated one of its tehsils and introduced a new district called Uttarkashi.
Tourist can easily reach Tehri via Delhi or Dehradun and Haridwar. Buses and Private cabs and taxi are the best way to reach Tehri.
New Tehri is well connected by motorable roads with major destinations of Uttarakhand and northern states of India. Buses and Taxis to New Tehri are easily available from major destinations of Uttarakhand like Dehradun, Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Devprayag, Srinagar, Uttarkashi etc.
The nearest railway station to New Tehri is situated in Rishikesh. Rishikesh is well connected by railway networks with major destinations of India. Trains to Rishikesh Railway station are frequent. Tehri Dam is a place where one can see the might of both nature and humans.This rock and earth filled embankment dam is tallest dam in India and one of the tallest in world.The feeling of standing at an altitude of 1750 mts above the sea level sight is stupendous in itself.
This marvelous feat of engineering is the main attraction of New Tehri, the Dam generates electricity of 1000 megawatts. The dam not just provides you the most enchanting visuals of the mountains but the lake surrounding it will offer you plenty of adventure opportunities.
Koti Colony offers a mesmerizing view of Tehri Lake and Dam. It was primarily established to offer residence for the family members of people working with Tehri Hydroelectric Project. Currently, the Government is planning to set up this colony as the primary point for promoting adventure tourism at Tehri Lake.
Pratap Nagar is slowly emerging as a hotspot for aerial adventure tourism. The primary attractions are Paragliding and Hot Air Ballon. The mesmerizing view of full moon from the top of Tehri Lake is a sight to behold and a memory which you will treasure forever in your life.

The largest city in the hills of Gadhwal, Srinagar is an educational hub for the people of Gadhwal. It is located at a distance of 84kms from New Tehri, Srinagar has been in news due to the Multipurpose Hydroelectric project being created on the Alaknanda River. The place derived its name from Sri Yantra a mythical rock. It is also popular for the Dhari Devi Temple, which is revered as the Protecting Deity of Gadhwal Hills and the Char Dhams. Legend has it that the day Kedarnath was stormed by the worst Flash Floods in history of mankind; Dhari Devi was shifted hours before to the elevated platform. You can visit Kamaleshwra Temple, keshorinath Math and Vishnu Mohini temple apart from Dhari Devi Temple.
To reach Chandrabadani one has to trek for 1kms from the taxi stand. The place is located at a distance of 60kms from NewTehri and at an awe-inspiring height of 2277mts above the sea level.
Legend has it that the torso and weapons of Maa Sati fell here while her dead body was being carried by Lord Shiva, one can see several Trishuls (tridents) all over the hill surrounding the temple. It is one of the Shakti peeths and holy shrine of goddess Sati. There is no idol of the Goddess but a ShriYantra carved of stone is worshiped here. Every year in April, a fair is organized at the temple.
Located at a distance of 35kms from New Tehri Surkanda Devi is a popular destination among the tourists visiting Chamba and Dhanaulti. The Temple is situated at a height of astonishing 2757mts (10000fts) above the sea level and is dedicated to Maa sati the consort of Lord Shiva. As far as the origin if the Temple is concerned , it is said that after the death of Sati, a grief-striken Lord Shiva carried her body and the head of Maa Sati fell at the spot where the temple of Surkanda Devi is situated. The Temple is 1km away from KudduKhal village. It can be reached by a steep trek on foot.
Devprayag or Deoprayag is regarded as the confluence of two of heavenly rivers, Bhagirathi and Alaknandathat form the Holy Ganga. Raghunathjitemple is situated on the upper part of the village. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. On MahaShivratri the temple witnesses a huge turnaround when devotees pour the water of Holy Ganga on the Shivlinga. An observatory NakshatraVedhShala is located on a mountain called Dashrathanchal at Devprayag. The observatory is well-equipped with two telescopes and many books to support research in astronomy.

Rock climbing is a popular adventure sports in India, but it is limited to indoor rock climbing where artificial walls are created to give the climber a feeling of rock climbing. At the Tehri Lake you will be able to enjoy rock climbing amongst the nature, Climbing natural boulders and peaks of Himalayas.
Mountain biking comes in extreme adventure where in people try their biking skills while riding down the rugged paths of Mountains. At Tehri Lake the government is planning to build a Mountain Biking Track for the Biking enthusiast.
With Water sports you will be able to take part in Aerial adventure also. According to the government Aerial sports will constitute a major chunk of the activities planned at Tehri Lake. The following adventure activities will be available once the project gets finished.
Considered as one of the most extreme kinds of adventure sports, in Para Gliding you run from the top of a hill till the air lifts you up with the parachute attached to you. Paragliding is popular in many parts of Uttarakhand. Essentially a professional paraglider will also fly with you.
Para jumping is similar to paragliding, but the major difference is that instead of a hilltop, in Para Jumping you will jump from a small aircraft which will first carry you to a specific altitude. Para Jumping is also done with the help of professionals.
Hot Air Balloon
There are only a few places in India where you can go for Hot air Balloon ride; Tehri Lake is going to be one of them. Imagine yourself looking at the mountains and lake from the sky and the people below, it sure will be a surreal experience.
A major chunk of the Adventure sports will be Water sports as the location itself is Tehri Lake, which is of 44sqkms in area formed by the pristine waters of Bhagirathi River. The various sports facilities are in pipeline at Tehri Lake are:
Water Skiing is just like Skiing in snow minus the snow, instead of snow capped mountains you get a chance to ski on the waters. In water skiing you are given skis to be tied to the feet and then holding a rope which is tied to a motor boat you are taken for a ride in the waters.
Jet Skis, also called water scooters are a single person vehicle designed to travel in water. All of us have seen the Bollywood actors riding these machines in movies, but now you can also enjoy a ride on a Jet Ski and that too not at any beach but between the hills of Himalayas at Tehri Lake.
Kayaking is a water sport alien to India in which a person sits in a Kayak and braves the current of water. Kayaking can be done in white water as well as in calm water of any Lake.
We are all familiar with rafting, white water rafting is one of the most popular adventure sports in India, and Rishikesh is the place which comes in everyone’s mind when we talk about rafting. But now apart from Rishikesh you will be able to enjoy Rafting at Tehri Lake.
In Water Zorbing the person is made to sit inside a giant Plastic ball which is transparent which is them left to float in the water so that you get the feeling of walking on water. Currently you can find Zorbing in many water parks of India, but all of them are held in small ponds. But imagine yourself Zorbing above a Lake having an area of 44sq kms .? Now that will be a surreal experience.
Also known as Parakiting, in this water sports a person is towed behind a motorboat while being attached to a specially designed Parachute, unlike skydiving the parachute remains attached to the person. You will find yourself closer to mountains while parasailing at Tehri.

Apart from water sports you will also find House boats based on the concept of Shikaras at Dal Lake, where you can book a House boat and spend unforgettable time in the Himalayas, in the Land of God. These house boats will have all the facilities of a small guest house.
The most common of recreational facilities available at major water bodies is boating. You can enjoy boating in Tehri Lake when you have completed all the other Adventure activities.
